OUR LAND: ROMAGNA
Romagna is a sort of Sangiovese landscape. In every ‘here and there’ at different altitudes, you can find a wine with a different character.
The Sangiovese grape, as is true with many other cultivated crops, is susceptible to the differences of soil, altitude, and climate.
The production area along the Via Emilia extending from the south of Bologna up to the province of Rimini. Sangiovese is about 85% (Romagna area), while the other varieties will cover the small part of the production. Along these years we have noticed that international varieties have found the best terroir to grow.
SOIL AND VINEYARDS
Enio Ottaviani vineyards are located in the Rimini district, precisely in San Clemente, on the soft hills facing the Adriatic sea, enjoying the sea breeze.
The vines grow in clay loams and the soil offers notes of brine and minerals to our wines. The most part of them are located in the wild oasis of River Conca -12 hectares-, at 60m above the sea level. We are just 15 km distant from the sea. You can find 8 hectares at 150m above the sea level other 8 hectares of red grapes varieties.
The oasis soils have a clay pattern, sometimes blue one and lime. The sediments date back to Pliocene Epoch (5 million years ago).
The proximity to the sea gives it a distinct mineral and salty flavor.
The hilly soils have ( at 150m above the sea level) a more chalky pattern. We adopt a fragmentation system in the vineyards due to the difference of soils and grapes and wind influence. We work every lot separately, in order to obtain the balance among different soils and maintain the quality of the wine expression.
